'Mopane Siesta'

Giraffe in Mopane Woodland, Matopos, Zimbabwe

A Chalk Pastel by Gordon Howard

A Woodland Seer

This chalk pastel is of noble giraffe in the Matopos, in the south west of Zimbabwe. This is an area where there are a large number of granite hills or inselbergs. The Mopane woodland in between these hills can have orange and yellow leaves, and the shapes of the trees behind the giraffe show how well their camouflage enables them to blend into their surroundings
